Mariposa County Jail Overview

The official Adult Detention Facility page identifies the jail as a Mariposa County Sheriff's Office division and a Type II local adult detention facility. In California, that means a local jail used for adults who are pending arraignment, in trial, serving allowed local sentences, awaiting transport, or held for a lawful agency request. Mariposa County also notes that the jail works with local, state, and federal law-enforcement agencies. That matters because a booking may start with the Sheriff's Office, CHP, Yosemite National Park, or another agency, while the person may still be processed through the county jail.

The current jail opened on Highway 49 North in 1995 after Mariposa's older jail history moved through log, granite, and sheriff-campus facilities. County and Sheriff materials describe a compact facility with single cells, dormitory-style housing, a medical exam room, a kitchen, program areas, administrative space, and separate exercise spaces for male and female inmates. Mariposa County Jail Capacity

The main sourced capacity figure for the Mariposa County Adult Detention Facility is 58 beds. The FY 2025 Sheriff annual report calls it a 58-bed Type II correctional facility, while the official jail history describes capacity as about 60 incarcerated persons. Older Grand Jury material said practical capacity can be lower because male/female separation, gang separation, classification, and housing needs can limit where people may safely be placed. The 2021 Sheriff annual report also documented a temporary COVID-era reduction from 58 beds to 27 operational spaces.

BSCC demographic reference data showed Mariposa County jail average daily population dropping from 49 in 2012 to 27 in the first three quarters of 2021. Sheriff booking counts also declined from 1,069 in 2017 to 551 in 2021. Those numbers should not be read as a live head count. The Sheriff's jail page links to the Daily Booking Report, which covers people arrested and booked into the Adult Detention Facility during the last 24 hours. The report is a public PDF, not a name-search portal. It may include a person who has already been released during the report period, and it may omit someone who was booked outside that period.

2. Review the PDF for the person's name, booking number, arrest date, charges, bond, arrest agency, and release date if shown.
3. If the person is not listed but the arrest was recent, call the Adult Detention Facility at 209-966-3616.
4. Use Mariposa County VINE or VINELink for custody-status notifications and facility location alerts.
5. Use NextRequest for older booking records, booking photos, or public records not posted online.

Mariposa County Jail Contact

The Adult Detention Facility is staffed around the clock, but the public lobby has posted daytime hours. The jail phone is the official fallback when the Daily Booking Report is too narrow or too old for a current custody question. The facility also lists a mailing address, fax line, and public email in source material. Visitors should use the jail phone before travel if classification, housing block, or visit status may affect access.

Mariposa County Jail Visiting

The official visiting page says people in custody receive one one-hour visiting block per week and may split that time into shorter visits. Visits start on the hour, space is limited, and contact visits are not allowed. All nonlegal visits may be monitored and recorded. Visitors need valid photo ID, must follow the dress rules, and may be removed if adults or children break facility rules.

Mariposa County Jail Mail Money

Mariposa County changed nonlegal jail mail handling effective June 1, 2024. Nonlegal mail is sent to a Longview, Texas processing address for scanning and electronic delivery, then destroyed after processing. Legal and medical mail do not go to that scanning address. The jail also limits page count, photo count, paper size, and return-address requirements. Packages, stamps, blank paper, stickers, scented items, and similar items are not accepted through ordinary mail.

Commissary orders are weekly when the person has funds and no disciplinary restriction. County rules say money must be deposited by 9 p.m. on the last ordering day, currently Monday, for the order cycle. Personal checks are not accepted, funds cannot be transferred to another incarcerated person's account, and emergency releases of funds require a request and approval.

Mariposa County Jail Booking

Booking at the Adult Detention Facility creates the county jail record. The Daily Booking Report fields show how the process is documented: booking number, name, arrest date and time, release date if present, arrest location, physical description, residence city and state, charges, bond, warrant type and number, arrest agency, and jurisdiction. The public PDF did not show housing location, court date, movement details, or a booking photo in the inspected sample.

Classification follows intake. The county classification page says staff use booking status, current and past behavior, and the nature of current and past charges to make housing decisions. All incarcerated persons are locked down for 24 hours to confirm classification unless pre-classified before admission. The posted categories include general population, administrative separation, lockdown separation, and protective custody. Protective custody can be requested by speaking with jail staff and may also apply to medical or mental-health needs.

Mariposa County Jail Programs

The FY 2025 Sheriff annual report says the facility supports rehabilitative and restorative programs with community organizations and allied agencies. Earlier Sheriff reporting described tablet-based access to GED courses, cognitive and behavioral materials, mental-health content, job skills, college material, religious and spirituality resources, health topics, reading, ESL, legal topics, and other personal development material. Jail FAQ material also references Work Furlough, Weekend Service, Electronic Monitoring, and jail diversion, with probation involved in some alternatives.

Oversight sources should be read with dates. The FY 2025 report describes favorable BSCC and STC inspections, while BSCC's 2024 noncompliance material listed the Adult Detention Facility for a safety-check documentation and review-process issue under Title 15 section 1027.5.
